Pasta
  • 1 lb ziti noodles These hearty pasta tubes are great for holding onto the rich sauce and melted cheese.
Meat
  • 1.5 lbs ground Italian sausage Choose spicy or sweet for preferred flavor.
Sauce
  • 4 cloves garlic (minced) Enhances overall flavor.
  • 1 can (28-oz) crushed tomatoes Serves as the base for the sauce.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Essential for seasoning.
  • 1.5 teaspoons sugar Balances acidity of tomatoes.
  • 0.25 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes Adds a touch of heat.
  • 1 cup heavy cream Makes the sauce rich and velvety.
  • 1/3 cup grated pecorino Romano or Parmigiano Reggiano cheese (divided) Adds salty and nutty flavor.
  • 8 oz whole milk mozzarella cheese (shredded, about 2 cups) Gives the signature gooeyness.
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh basil (plus more for serving) Adds fragrance and color.

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by bringing a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the ziti noodles and cook until al dente (about 7 minutes). Drain the pasta and set aside.
  2. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and adjust the oven rack to the middle position.
Cooking
  1. In a large sauté pan, heat the skillet over medium-high heat. Crumble the sausage into the pan and cook until lightly browned (5-6 minutes). Transfer to a plate and drain excess fat.
  2. Add minced garlic to the pan, cook until soft (about 1 minute). Pour in crushed tomatoes, then add salt, sugar, and red pepper flakes. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
Assembly
  1. In the sauce, add heavy cream, 1/3 cup of pecorino Romano, cooked sausage, and fresh basil. Stir to combine.
  2. Carefully pour the sauce mixture into the pot with the ziti pasta. Gently stir to combine.
  3. Spoon half of the pasta mixture into a baking dish. Add half of the shredded mozzarella and half of the remaining pecorino Romano. Layer the rest of the pasta mixture and top with remaining mozzarella and pecorino Romano.
  4. Bake uncovered until cheese is melted and bubbly (about 15-20 minutes). Sprinkle with additional basil before serving.

Notes

For a healthier version, substitute whole wheat ziti and lean turkey sausage. Feel free to add vegetables like spinach or mushrooms for added nutrition.
