Ingredients

For the Sauce
  • 2 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen) These juicy berries provide natural sweetness and color.
  • ½ cup ketchup Adds base richness and tanginess.
  • ¼ cup apple cider vinegar Balances the sweetness of the blueberries.
  • ¼ cup brown sugar (light or dark) Enhances the depth of flavor with caramel notes.
  • 2 tablespoons honey (or maple syrup) A natural sweetener that adds a lovely glaze.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Adds umami complexity.
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika Adds a smoky depth.
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder For aromatic warmth and flavor.
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder Subtly elevates the overall flavor profile.
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper Offers a touch of spice.
  • ¼ teaspoon salt Balances all flavors.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a medium saucepan, toss in all the ingredients together: blueberries, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, honey, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, ground black pepper, and salt.
  2. Stir everything together and bring it to a gentle boil over medium heat.
  3. Once it’s boiling, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. When the sauce has thickened, take it off the heat. Use an immersion blender to purée the sauce until smooth, or blend in a regular blender after it cools slightly.
  5. Serve drizzled as a glaze over ribs or grilled chicken, or as a zesty dipping sauce.

Notes

Adjust sweetness to your preference. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week or freeze for three months. Try adding spices or different berries for variations.
