  • 1 Tablespoon canola or vegetable oil For searing and caramelization
  • 2 Tablespoons salted butter Adds richness
  • ½ medium yellow onion, sliced thin Adds sweetness
  • 8 ounces baby bella or white mushrooms, washed and sliced Creates an earthy flavor
  • 1 Tablespoon Dijon mustard For a zesty kick
  • 1 Tablespoon water Helps in sauce creation
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Enhances beef flavor
  • ¼ teaspoon salt Basic seasoning
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper Basic seasoning
For the burgers
  • 1 pound ground beef Ideal fat content for juiciness
  • 1 ½ teaspoons seasoning salt Enhances flavor
  • ½ teaspoon pepper Adds subtle heat
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder Incorporates aroma
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese Melts beautifully
  • 4 pieces hamburger buns Toasted for texture

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the canola oil and butter. Allow the butter to melt completely.
  2. Once melted, add the sliced onions and cook for about 3 minutes until they soften, stirring occasionally until they are light golden brown.
  3. Introduce the mushrooms into the skillet and sauté for another 4 minutes until tender and aromatic.
  4. Add the Dijon mustard, water, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Cook for an additional 4-5 minutes until the sauce reduces and veggies are tender. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat, aiming for 375-400 degrees F.
Cooking the Burgers
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, seasoning salt, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Divide the mixture into four equal portions, shaping them into patties slightly larger than the buns.
  3. Grill each side of the patties for 4-6 minutes, or until desired doneness is achieved (medium-well at 150 degrees F).
  4. In the last 2-3 minutes of grilling, add a slice or two of Swiss cheese on each patty and close the grill to melt the cheese.
Assembly
  1. Assemble your burgers by placing the grilled patties on toasted hamburger buns and topping them with the sautéed mushroom mixture.
  2. Add any additional condiments as desired.

Notes

For juicy burgers, use ground beef with a fat content of 80/20. Let patties rest after grilling for juicier bites. Consider caramelizing onions longer for deeper flavor, or adding fresh herbs.
